La Parguera Ocean Acidification Buoy is Back on Station After its Yearly Refurbishment

During the last two weeks this buoy was at the dock of the Department of Marine Sciences on Isla Magueyes, where it was given maintenance to all its sensors. The buoy reports every 3 hours the atmospheric concentration of CO2, and the seawater CO2, temperature, salinity, pH (acidity), turbidity, chlorophyll, and oxygen. Thanks to the team of CARICOOS, PMEL, the University of New Hampshire, and the Department of Marine Sciences of the UPR-Mayaguez for making this mission a success!

The record concentration for the month of May of CO2 in the atmosphere reached 414 parts per million (ppm) at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii and in Puerto Rico, the seventh consecutive year of greatest global increase. Click here to see the graphics.
