CARICOOS was honored to host renowned Sargassum expert Dr. Brian Lapointe during his recent visit to Puerto Rico. Alongside Dr. Dani Cox from Anchor Consultations LLC, he joined our team in collecting Sargassum samples in neritic and pelagic waters, sharing valuable insights into field methodologies. Both scientists delivered seminars entitled “Nutrient Content, Stoichiometry, and Productivity of Pelagic Sargassum in a Changing World” and “Advances in Understanding the Pelagic Sargassum Microbiome,” respectively, which engaged CARICOOS staff, graduate students, and faculty from the Marine Sciences Department in meaningful discussions on this pressing environmental issue. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Dr. Lapointe’s decades of expertise and look forward to continued collaboration in advancing research on Sargassum and its impacts.
