The CARICOOS Program Office had the pleasure of hosting University of Virgin Islands’ Sonaljit Mukherjee and Andy Breton from January 30th until February 3rd. The main purpose of the visit was to exchange knowledge toward enhancing CARICOOS forecasting capabilities and UVI data management protocols. They met with Juan Gonzalez-Lopez, our operational numerical modeling specialist, to discuss ideas on three-dimensional modeling of ocean currents and strategies for computation through a cloud-computing platform. The visit also included extensive exchanges with Jorge Capella, our data management and communication (DMAC) coordinator, regarding data processing tools and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures; as well as laboratory and field visits hosted by CARICOOS Ocean Observing Engineer Patricia Chardón, who described the latest developments in the expansion of the CARICOOS HF Radar network. Furthermore, CARICOOS students and staff had the opportunity to learn about Sonaljit’s work through a seminar entitled “Turbulence, dissipation, and dispersion of tracers in submesoscale resolving simulations – a process study”, which covered in great detail vertical energy dissipation phenomena, a process of high relevance in PR and USVI waters.
